A Brief History of Spanish/Moroccan Relations

The history between Spain and Morocco is long and complex; for centuries, the two nations have been marked by tension, conflict, and war. While their geographic proximity has led to a shared language and culture, their difference in politics, ideology, and religion continue to impact diplomatic and intercultural relations.

For Moroccan refugees, immigrants, and migrants, Spain has always been one of the most common nations to settle. With more than 760,000 Moroccans, Spain hosts the largest Moroccan diaspora—second only to France. In 2021, 40% of migrants entering Spain without papers were Moroccan.

Although significant differences divide the two nations and their people, the connection between Spain and Morocco is undeniable. After settling in Spain, Moroccan immigrants are challenged to find a balance between their own culture, and that of their host country.
